The Rivers South Esk and North Esk, the Tay Estuary, Montrose Basin, Balgavies Loch, the Angus coast and Dundee’s network of parks and green spaces all support important wildlife. The area is particularly notable for migratory and coastal birds, salmon rivers, pollinators, native woodlands and a rich community of naturalists and wildlife recorders.

Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Angus & Dundee Group provides a local focus for members interested in wildlife conservation, volunteering, fundraising and natural-history activities. Its area includes Dundee and Angus, with local involvement at Scottish Wildlife Trust reserves including Montrose Basin, Balgavies Loch, Loch of Lintrathen, Seaton Cliffs and The Miley.
North East Scotland Biological Records Centre collects, manages and shares biodiversity information across Angus and the wider north-east. It promotes biological recording and provides data used for conservation, planning, research and environmental management. Its current coverage includes Angus, Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Moray and the Cairngorms National Park.
Tayside Biodiversity Partnership coordinates biodiversity action across Angus and Perth & Kinross through conservation projects, specialist groups, recording and community involvement. Its current work includes the Tayside Local Biodiversity Action Plan, recording initiatives and projects for priority species and habitats in Angus. Dundee City Council is no longer part of the partnership.
Tayside Recorders is the regional biological-recording network supporting naturalists who document species and habitats across Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross. It provides information, contacts, training and resources to help wildlife records contribute to conservation and environmental decision-making.
Angus & Dundee Bird Club promotes the study and recording of birds across the area through field outings, indoor meetings and its annual bird report. The club also encourages wider interest in wildlife and conservation and works with other local organisations and recording bodies.
Dundee Naturalists Society, founded in 1874, promotes the study, appreciation and conservation of the natural world. It runs talks, field excursions and walks and undertakes practical conservation at Carsegowniemuir, a nature reserve managed by the Society. Its current programme includes outings throughout 2026.
River South Esk Catchment Partnership brings landowners, communities and organisations together to restore the River South Esk and its surrounding habitats. Its work includes river and wetland restoration, riparian woodland, invasive-species control, fish monitoring, natural flood management and landscape-scale nature recovery across Angus.
Esk Rivers & Fisheries Trust is a charitable organisation working to improve the rivers and freshwater habitats of the North Esk, South Esk, Bervie and Lunan catchments. Its work includes habitat improvement and projects supporting wild salmon, sea trout and the wider river environment.
Tay Estuary Forum brings organisations and individuals together to promote the sustainable management of the Tay Estuary and adjacent coast. Its work covers water quality, climate change, nature conservation, marine planning, sustainable use and environmental education across the Tay and neighbouring coastline.
East Scotland Branch of Butterfly Conservation supports butterfly and moth conservation across eastern Scotland, including Angus and Tayside. Its work involves recording, surveys, habitat management and volunteer projects, including conservation of the Small Blue along the Angus coast.
Tayside Amphibian & Reptile Group promotes the recording and conservation of amphibians and reptiles across Angus and Perth & Kinross. Its activities include surveys, pond restoration, practical conservation and volunteer projects.
Tayside & Fife Fungal Group studies and records the region’s fungi through field forays, workshops and talks. It aims to improve knowledge of fungal diversity while encouraging conservation of rare species and important fungal habitats, with Angus included within its recording area.
Ballumbie Hedgehog Rescue is a Dundee-based registered charity rescuing and rehabilitating sick and injured wild hedgehogs from Dundee, Angus and North East Fife. It also works with communities and other rescues to promote better understanding and protection of hedgehogs.
Dundee Riverside Foundation is a community-led environmental charity working to protect and enhance the natural environment around Dundee’s Riverside area. Its work includes ecological restoration, green and blue-space protection, environmental information and community participation in decisions affecting the local landscape.
